As if drafting Sedrick Ellis and releasing Olindo Mare weren’t enough, Sean Payton’s given us yet another reason to put that whole “double reverse debacle” in the Tampa Bay game behind us.
On Monday, the Saints head coach held a news conference in New Orleans to announce his newly formed foundation: “Play it Forward.” Think of it as “Oprah’s Big Give” meets the NFL meets “K-ville,” minus the gumbo party of course.
The foundation will raise money for families and communities in the Gulf Coast. It may sound like every other foundation that popped up after Katrina, except this one will actually raise money to benefit other charities. The initial beneficiaries will include Brad Pitt’s Make it Right NOLA and the Dr. Phil Foundation.
What we love about the idea of Play it Forward, beyond the fact that it invokes the name of the delicious Brad Pitt, is that it will also branch out to help smaller charities. That means all those lesser-known, local good will missions that hardly get any attention or financial support might finally get the help they need to help others. Doesn’t it make you all warm and fuzzy inside?
For the ballers who want to help out, you can take part in a fancy schmancy Black and Gold Gala Fundraiser going on this October. If you’re lacking the bank account or the tux to take part in that, then donate whatever you can by logging on to paytonsplayitforwardfoundation.com.

I want the ball. And the slippers and the tux-clad escorts. But my money would do better going to the cause, wouldn’t it?
